Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Speech Therapy
General Questions
How do I know if my child needs speech therapy?
If your child is not meeting age-expected communication milestones—such as babbling by 12 months, using single words by 18 months, or combining words by age 2—a speech-language evaluation can help determine whether therapy is needed. Other signs include difficulty being understood by unfamiliar listeners, frustration when trying to communicate, limited eye contact or social engagement, or challenges following directions. If you are concerned, it is always better to seek an evaluation sooner rather than later. Early identification leads to better outcomes.
What happens during a speech-language evaluation?
A comprehensive evaluation at GABSOLutely Speaking typically includes a parent interview to understand your concerns and your child’s history, standardized and informal assessments of your child’s speech and language abilities, observation of your child’s communication in play-based and structured activities, and a detailed report with findings, recommendations, and a proposed treatment plan. Evaluations are designed to be comfortable and child-friendly.
How long are therapy sessions and how often will my child be seen?
Therapy sessions are typically 30 to 60 minutes in length, depending on your child’s age, needs, and attention span. Most children are seen one to two times per week, but the frequency is determined on an individual basis during the evaluation and treatment planning process.
What ages do you serve?
GABSOLutely Speaking serves children from birth through school age, including infants and toddlers (birth–3) through early intervention, preschool-age children, and school-age children and adolescents.
Do you offer teletherapy?
Yes. We offer teletherapy services for eligible families throughout the state of Texas. Teletherapy is delivered through a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform and is suitable for many speech and language goals. During your consultation, we will discuss whether teletherapy is a good fit for your child.
